This week I’m introducing something a little different here at Led by the Book called the Friday Round Up. This is where I share some of the things I have been learning, and I hope you will find this information helpful.
For this first edition of the Friday Round Up, I’m sharing 5 Harvard Business Review articles that made me think differently about what it means to be a great leader.
Why is it important to be a great leader?
Some may say that being a great leader allows you to have great influence over your team, or that it leads to better overall performance. While this is undoubtedly true, as a Christian, it is important to keep in mind that your leadership is ultimately a reflection of Christ himself. As a matter of fact, everything you do is a reflection of Christ. This is why Christian leaders should be diligent to set a good example for those whom they lead. These articles can help show you some of the technical aspects on how to do that. Enjoy!

If you are a new leader, or struggle to make a connection with your team, then this article is a must read. Many leaders do not delegate enough, so they become micro-managers in their style. Others delegate too much and cause their best people to burnout. There is a fine balance between the two. This article will help you to find that balance.
Some people try too hard to be liked. The Bible refers to this as man-pleasing. As a leader, your job is not be liked, but to serve. “If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.” (Mark 9:35)
You do not have to the fun boss, you just need to lead well. This article does a great job showing the difference between the two.
“You shall not pervert justice; you shall not show partiality [or favoritism], nor take a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous” (Deuteronomy 16:19). Emphasis mine.
Fairness is one of the most important aspects of being a leader. Managers who are perceived as playing favorites –letting some get away with things, while punishing others—quickly lose their influence over the team. This article provides some good tips on how to be a fair manager.
Paul, writing to the Philippians, said: “Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. (Philippians 2:4)
Sometimes what is best for your most valuable employee is an opportunity outside the company. As a leader, be supportive of that and help them find that next best thing. I’m sure you would want your boss to do the same for you.
This article is all about how to help your best employees become better, even if that means leaving your company.
To be an effective leader, you need to get enough sleep – seriously! No one functions well while sleep deprived.
