In my last post, I provided a few networking tips to use, to help you find a job. I want to expand on these tips by sharing five more things you need to do in order to land your dream job.
Focus on the process
Before we delve into the five tips, keep in mind that fixating too much on the end goal of the job search can be very discouraging, especially as the weeks pile up and you have not received any callbacks from potential employers. That’s why I want you to focus on the process instead. The process is far more important than the outcome. It is only a matter of time before you eventually find a job. However, if your job-search process is spotty and ineffective, weeks can turn into months very quickly, and you might end up lending a job that you hate.
Another thing to keep in mind while looking for work: have fun during the process!
With that in mind, let’s delve into the five tips. Apply these tips with the intensity of a gazelle. Hustle hard and your reward will pay off. If you knock long enough, it is only a matter of time before doors start opening for you.
Five tips to help you land your dream job:
- Write a compelling resume
Your resume is your one opportunity to make a connection with a hiring manager, who is probably sifting through hundreds of resumes per week. Do not waste the opportunity by just providing a list of the tasks you did in your previous jobs. Instead, your resume should communicate results. Paint a picture of what you did and what the outcome was. Provide context. Which of these candidates would you want to interview based on this one line from their resume?

Resume of candidate 2: Brought in $400K of new business in Q4 of 2018, through effective sales presentations to clients
Candidate 2 clearly has a more compelling story to tell. This is how you should structure your resume.

2. Upload your resume to online job boards
Job boards make money by placing qualified candidates in front of hiring managers. Sites like MONSTER, ZipRecruiter, and Indeed charge substantial monthly fees to companies who use their platform to find candidates like you. So, upoload your resume and let these job boards work for you.
Employers search job boards using analytics or buzzwords for the roles that they want to fill. So, if you are looking for a sales job, make sure to use the word “sales” throughout your resume, because that’s what employers will be searching for. Obviously, the context has to make sense; you don’t want to be obnoxious about it.
When you upload your resume on the job boards, be ready to receive a ton of calls from insurance companies looking for Sales Associates. Those jobs are usually either 100% commission-based or provide very little base salary. The Sales jobs that pay well are found usually at established Fortune 500 companies. Those are the ones you should target.
3. Treat your career like a business
I spent five years running operations at a Healthcare company and came across many people who were just waiting for job opportunities to be handed to them. They put in their time and waited, only to be passed over time and time again. Do not do that. To get the job you want, treat your career as a business.
How do you that? Keep in mind that companies are in the business of adding value to their customers. That’s how they make money in return. The same is true for you. The employer is not doing you a favor by hiring you. Rather, they are looking to hire someone that can add value to their business and solve their problems. As the job seeker, then, you will have some leverage if you show how you will add value to their organization. Cast a wide net and be clear on the skills you bring to the table. Even if you don’t have ALL the qualifications they are looking for, let them know how you will be able to mitigate those shortcomings by leveraging your full arsenal of skills.
Lastly, make sure you will be comfortable with the working relationship. Don’t go into job interviews with rose-colored glasses. As much as the company is trying to figure out if you will be a good fit for them, you need to figure out if you will actually like working for that company. It’s a two-way street, after all.
4. Read good books
The job search process is an opportunity to learn and develop your skill sets. One smart way to do this is by reading good books. Read often and read widely. Besides, when else will you have the luxury of time to read as many books as you please during the day? Once you start working again, most of your free time will go bye bye.
Reading will help ease your anxiety about the job search. It will also provide productive entertainment and keep your mind sharp and invigorated. The best part of it all, some of the stuff you read will eventually become great talking points during your job interview.
5. Pray and ask God to open the doors
Finally, I said this last time in part one, but it is worth repeating here: seek God’s guidance. God has promised to provide all of your needs, so trust him to lead you to the right job. You will not be disappointed.
I can tell stories for days of how God has guided me throughout my career. Eight years ago, I was a desperate mess with no idea what I was going to do with my life. Those were tough days, but I leaned on God and trusted that he would guide me where he wanted me to go. The journey has had its bumps and bruises, but I am amazed at the doors he opened for me. There’s nothing more exciting than being where God wants you to be. Let him guide you there!
The Big Takeaway
Every phase in life, even unemployment, is a learning opportunity. So as you look for work, find opportunities to grow and stretch yourself during the process. Get outside of your comfort and try different things. For example, apply to work in industries that you have not worked in before. Sometimes companies are eager to bring in new talent from other industries because they want people who can come in and provide a fresh perspective on the problems that they are trying to solve.
Six years ago, when I first applied to work as a Supervisor in Healthcare, I had no formal leadership experience. Enough people saw the potential in me, though, and gave me a chance. Do not sell yourself short. Unemployment is like hitting the reset button on your career. It can be scary, I know, but it can also lead to opportunities of a lifetime.
